Why i love my job

It’s 11.30pm on a Sunday night and this is what I’m doing, a simple task that started off simple, and then made me realise why I love doing what I do and why it’s vocation… so i thought I would share it here.

Hello there. My name is Grace Dyas. I work with a company called THEATREclub and I am writing to ask you to come and sit in a theatre with us for 2 hours this October (with a break in the middle.) Don’t worry, it won’t be like the theatre you’ve seen before. It won’t feel boring, and it won’t be posh.  You’ll be interested, I know you will because we’ve thought long and hard about who we are asking to come along.

There’s two different plays on, and they’re both about Ireland.

The Family is a look at the home, at growing up and where you grew up…  from knick knacks to knock outs, it’s about getting caught robbing from your sister, hiding from them in the pub and why we always end up having chips when we plan a ‘nice family dinner’. HEROIN is a look at what happens when we grow up, at the history of heroin in Ireland over the last 40 years, and how we got here and how much we care.

We’re putting these two plays on because we want to talk. We need to talk. And we want to talk to you. And we want you to talk when you leave. And here, we think that that- that will change the world.

So are you coming? I promise you’ll feel welcome, no one is gonna look at you funny, and you won’t be made to do anything, no one will pull you up from the audience, but you can heckle if you like. You can bring your tea in, or a drink if you want You’ll always know where to look and what to do but you might not know what to feel. . We just want you to be there. But we know you’ll be glad you came, and you’ll have loads to talk about after.
